Context

As part of the Color by Design Bootcamp with IDEO, explored Beyond the Bag, an initiative focused on reducing single-use plastics and reimagining sustainable solutions within the retail experience.

Our challenge was to prototype potential pilots that could extend the initiative into future applications.

Through user research, interviews, and concept testing, I contributed to a series of wireframes and prototypes envisioning lifestyle-oriented experiences that support long term habit formation.

How might we encourage individuals to incorporate sustainable choices?

Before conducting interviews, we created an opportunity tree to explore possible ways to encourage sustainable behavior. This process helped us break down the broad “How Might We” question into more focused areas we could later validate through research.

Learning from Early Concepts

Early wifeframes used on interviews

We conducted individual interviews to explore people’s sustainability and shopping habits and their openness to AI-powered recommendations for more sustainable choices. By sharing early concepts, we uncovered personal motivations, barriers, and emotions around sustainability in everyday life.

We synthesized insights into seven key themes:

  • Influence of ads while shopping

  • Quality and longevity of products

  • Disconnection from sustainability

  • AI transparency

  • Cost and affordability

  • Sustainable habits

  • Education and recommendations

Concept post interviews with feedback.

After conducting interviews and concept testing, we identified key opportunities around gamification, and habit formation, and reminders as effective ways to encourage sustainable behavior. These insights guided our brainstorming and prototyping sessions, where we explored how technology could make sustainability more engaging and achievable in everyday life.

Based on our interviews and research, we identified that timely reminders and progress tracking could play a crucial role in helping people build sustainable habits. We explored how AI could anticipate user needs and make eco-friendly behaviors easier to adopt consistently.

Final Prototype

During the final week of the project, we refined the visual language, and interaction design based on feedback from peers and IDEO mentors. The final prototype showcases the initial personalized quiz, and homepage, including key elements like challenges, learning prompts, and points for rewards.
